Biska Jatra to be celebrated in Seattle with Khat Jatra and Jho Bhoe

Seattle’s Nepalese community is gearing up for a grand celebration of Biska Jatra, the hallmark festival of Madhyapur Thimi, on Saturday, the April 13th, 2024. Thimi Seattle Pucha is presenting this event promising a vibrant spectacle of culture and tradition. The organizer conveyed this information during a press briefing on Sunday.

Known affectionately as “Mini Thimi”, Seattle hosts a significant population of Thimi residents who are eager to uphold their cultural heritage even miles away from home. Mr. Suraj Ranjitkar, coordinator of the event, expresses the community’s excitement: “Biska Jatra is an integral part of our identity, and we’re thrilled to celebrate it with fervor here in Seattle.”

The highlight of the event is the Khat Jatra, a palanquin procession adorned with vibrant decorations and accompanied by live Dhimay and Nayakhin drumming, echoing the spirit of festivities from back home. Adding to the allure is the mouthwatering Newa Bhoe, a traditional feast served in line, seated cross-legged, reminiscent of the authentic flavors of Madhyapur Thimi. Dineshwar Shrestha, the bhoe coordinator, shared that participants will have the opportunity to savor a diverse array of authentic, home-cooked dishes, creating lasting memories.

With the aim of making the event a resounding success, the organizers have rallied support from the Thimi community as well as other organizations. Mr. Amir Prajapati, the economic coordinator, emphasizes, “We’re grateful for the collective effort to ensure the financial success of Biska Jatra. It’s an example of our community’s unity and commitment to preserving our cultural heritage.”

Despite being far from their homeland, the organizers are dedicated to showcasing Madhyapur Thimi’s rich art, culture, and festivals to the world. “Through events like Biska Jatra, we aim to bring together all Thimi residents, fostering a sense of unity and pride in our shared heritage,” Gyan Bade, the head of Shree Panchami Guthi, Seattle adds.

Among the cherished traditions featured in the celebration are Nayo Khin, Dhime, Abir, Thwon, Chilakh, and Dyo Kha, all integral elements of Biska Jatra that evoke nostalgia and camaraderie among Thimi Basile abroad.

“We are delighted to reconnect with our roots and extend a warm invitation to everyone to join us in celebrating Biska Jatra,” says Sampurna Prajapati, a community leader from Thimi Seattle Pucha, “Together, let’s not only revel in our traditions but also contribute to the promotion of tourism in Madhyapur Thimi.”

As the countdown to April 13th begins, the Nepalese community in Seattle eagerly anticipates a day filled with joy, cultural exchange, and the timeless traditions of Biska Jatra.
